On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, December 6, 2022, Spotin organized an online event entitled “Disability = Impairment?”, where we explored the difference between disability and impairment, emphasizing societal barriers. Our exceptional guest speakers Panagiotis Pitsiniagas and Cool Crips highlighted the importance of inclusion and visibility.
Key insights:
- Impairment is not synonymous with disability. Impairment refers to any physical or mental characteristic differing from the norm. Disability results from societal barriers, not the impairment itself.
- Inclusive structures, activities and environments where all children can learn and play together are vital.
- Everyone benefits from having diverse individuals in their lives.
- Through mapping, students will experience the world differently, examining their daily paths through the lens of accessibility, raising visibility and encouraging greater inclusivity.
Heartfelt thanks to all who participated in this enlightening discussion!
