On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 6, 2022), Spotin organized an online event entitled “Disability = Impairment?”. Two outstanding guest speakers – accessibility consultant Panagiotis Pitsiniagas and the Cool Crips duo – explored the distinction between disability and impairment, emphasizing the role of societal barriers.
Key insights:
- Impairment is not synonymous with disability. Impairment refers to any physical or mental characteristic differing from the norm. Disability results from societal barriers, not the impairment itself.
- The term “special needs” is inherently divisive – the needs of people with disabilities are the same as everyone else’s. Inclusive structures and schools where all children learn and play together are essential.
- Everyone benefits from having diverse individuals in their lives.
- Through the Competition’s mapping activities, students will experience the world through a different lens, raising visibility around accessibility and encouraging greater inclusivity.
Heartfelt thanks to all who participated in this enlightening discussion!
