DESMOI. Mapping Stories that Connect Us to Evros
DESMOI invited students from across Greece to discover the stories and features that connect their own communities to the borderland of Evros — weaving geographical, historical, cultural and emotional bonds through digital maps and geo-storytelling.
Description
The educational programme “DESMOI. Mapping stories that connect us to Evros” was designed and implemented jointly by Diazoma Association and Spotin during the 2024-2025 school year.
The progarmme aimed to highlight stories that link different regions of Greece to the rich cultural and natural heritage of the borderland of Evros.
Harnessing the power of digital maps and geo-narratives, students from schools in Evros, Kalamata, Tripoli, Thessaloniki, Athens, East Attica and Pella explored the region, discovering shared elements with their living place. Roads, rivers, forests, caves, fortresses, Byzantine churches, refugee settlements, archaeological museums, local agricultural products, sericulture, oak forests of Evros devastated by wildfires and decorative patterns from Evros’ folk art became the raw material for weaving bonds (desmoi) – geographical, historical, cultural and emotional.
Participants were trained by Spotin in the use of geo-technologies, with the technological tools provided free of charge to the schools upon request.
